I was living in isolation, two hours away from all my friends and family, working a low-paying job and financially dependent on a toxic relationship.
I was constantly feeling so trapped and powerless.
My phone never really rang much. But there was this one cold winter day in February where I received the most painful phone call that altered everything:
My 49 year old mother was diagnosed with cancer.
The waiting period for her procedure and test results felt like Limbo and Hell merged into one, and I was living in whatever the result of that was.
The huge wave of uncertainty triggered a massive existential crisis in me.
Life suddenly felt fleeting and fragile. Anything could be gone at any second.
In those moments, my biggest childhood dream of becoming a published author kept pounding in my mind.
The urgency to suddenly fulfil this dream consumed me.
I didn’t want to take time for granted anymore. I didn’t want to take my life for granted anymore.
I grabbed my black leather journal, filled with entries that I had been writing for years.
Through all the episodes of complicated love, heartbreak, self-discovery and healing recorded in its pages, I began to form poems that would become my book, rose petals and stardust.
During this phase, re-writing my journal entries into poems became my lifeline, my way to cope with the fear and anxiety surrounding my mother’s cancer.
The themes of love, heartbreak, and healing emerged naturally.
They were the essence of my lived experiences, poured out on paper as I navigated life’s tumultuous journey.
When I finally compiled my journal entries and poems into a book, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace.
